I've bought a set of hooks and am waiting for Amazon to bring me some wool. I'll then start to teach myself how to crochet.

Is it doable.....to be able to teach yourself?

I wish I had asked my nan to teach me, years ago.

Lots of stuff on YouTube Rocky. My Mum taught me the basics with wool. She moved on to cotton and did a beautiful table runner which graces my dining room table
My wife taught herself many years ago. She doesn't do it now as she prefers knitting as a pastime.

Thank you both. I feel suitably encouraged.
I just looked on YouTube to show how to crochet. Think I've got it! Might take it up myself.... :-)

We'll compare notes, Patsy.
I have a friend on FB, I think she's self taught, seeing what she makes now compared to a few years back is amazing.

Fingers crossed, I'll be the same.
Hi, Rocky...I taught myself to crochet about fifty years ago so it was from books.......
Two tips.....using a large hook make a long chain to get the feel of how you are comfortable using the hook. I hold my hook in a different way to many other folk. Some find a pencil hold best...some a fork hold......You will find the best way for you...
Look at youtube for ways to make sure you get a straight line at both sides. That's important because it's so easy to go wrong at the edge and you end up with a wedge shape instead of a square or rectangle and that's a frustrating mistake most of us make when starting...

Remember when you are looking at videos that UK and USA use different terms.....a single crochet in the USA is a double crochet in the UK for example....

You'll enjoy crocheting...I'm just getting into freeform crochet and have just finished a set of quirky table mats for my daughter....just crochet as the mood, colours and shapes take you...fun for when you've got the hang of it and are familiar with what works and what doesn't...let us know how you're getting on....x

Thanks Gness. I’ll post a photo of the obligatory scarf, once it’s finished ;)
I have had lessons from The Master (Mistress?) - my only effort so far looked like Pablo Picasso had designed a fishing net ...

... I'll stick to fiddling with computers and doing The Listenerer I think.
Do, Rocky...would love to see it. I have been gifted some beautiful little pieces of soft leather. I'm planning to cut them into shapes...punch holes around the edges then, with crochet, turn them into table mats.....eventually...will post when I get them finished....don't hold your breath though!....
Happy crocheting.....x
