sorry to ask this so late at night but it's a last clue.
"Inhabitant of the Hebrides" I thought they were called Hebrideans but not so. With the letters I have the answer could be "isleman" and that would seem to be right. BUT! I cannot find a single reference to them being called isleman. Not one.
Could someone guide me please?

Thank you. That has unlocked my brain! I was obsessed with the Hebrides bit. But, as you say, it could just as easily have been ANY island. I am stupid!

Chambers has: islesman or isleman n an islander, esp an inhabitant of the Hebrides.
Thanks Calibax
I don't have a Chambers dictionary. I have an OED and three others....
Why is Chambers the best for crossword doers?
...because most setters use Chambers.
If it doesn't specifically mean Hebrides, the clue would be fairer if it said " Inhabitant of the Hebrides, say"
