... but are you surprised that Doreen Fletcher who started painting scenes of East End London in 1983 but gave up in 2004 after being discouraged by a lack of recognition?

Had I lived/worked in any of these buildings or landscapes I would never want to hang any of these pictures on my wall. In fact I find most of them quite depressing.

I'm not made on them. They look like they've drawn the lines with a ruler.

a lot of London still looks like that, though usually with more people around - it may be the emptiness that make them look like Hoppers.

I don't find them depressing, but some of the ones she's done looking into the sun make things look very dark - I wonder if she worked from photos? Cameras do exaggerate the contrast a bit.
I like them, I like the colours and I particularly like the one in the snow. I think they are good.
if this link works, this is what the first one looks like now - pretty much identical

That's more depressing.
please explain
I like them too.

I used to live in Hackney in the 80s for a bit and I remember Rene's Cafe in Bow.

Give me this sort of art any day of the week over some of the cack that has paraded as 'art' in the Turner Prize over the years - I save a very special loathing for people who refer to any old tat thrown together as an 'installation'. That has to be just about the most pretentious word to describe any old rubbish there can possibly be.

I mean come on - I know art is subjective, but surely "Work No. 81 [by Martin Creed], ‘a one inch cube of masking tape in the middle of every wall in a building’" is more Emperor's New Clothes than 'art' isn't it?

Much preferable to all that Turner carp, but they look to me like analogue photographs that haven't quite been processed or printed right.
