Android Tablet- Keyboard Delay Help.

Hello Folks,

I have tried to help a couple of people who have dexterity problems use an Android tablet keyboard but have come up against a brick wall.

The problem is that they have great difficulty in simply tapping the keyboard and tend to leave their finger / stylus on the keyboard for too long to which an alternative character appears in their text message or Google search.

I have been into Accessibility and altered the setting in 'Tap and Hold Delay' and altered the setting in 'custom' to well over 10 seconds, but once I go back to using the keyboard, I still get an alternative character with a tap of anything over a second or so.

Am I making a mistake in thinking that 'Tap and Hold Delay' is for this purpose or is it actually for something else entirely?

Is it a fault in Android that is there but doesn't actually do anything?

Is there a actually a way to get a keyboard delay of at least 3 to 4 seconds so that I can show these people that they don't have to give up using their devices?

Your help is and always has been very much appreciated.
Looking forward to your reply in anticipation.

Best regards,

I don't know about Android Tablets, but on my Apple Mac hold delay sets the time (on holding a key down) between getting a single character, or repeated characters until the key is released. This prevents slow typists getting unrequired repeats when trying to type, for example, ttttthhhhhhaaaaaannnnnkkkkkksssssss.

This may be undelpful, but it will bump your question back into Latest posts

Does the information re. 'long-press' on this page help https://www.pcworld.com/article/3096930/android/6-ways-to-take-charge-of-the-stock-android-keyboard.html I don't have Android so have no idea what may have changed since this article was written

Canny,
What you have explained is indeed different on Android. On Android, a long key press is designed to give alternative characters rather than the same character repeated.
Many thanks for your reply though, it was many miles from being unhelpful.

Fitz,
I have looked at link you gave me, but have still hit a brick wall. I have tested it on my own Android version 8, but it seems you simply cannot have more than 700 milliseconds on the keyboard and there is no option to turn it off altogether.

Many thanks for your reply also.
