My father had just developed it recently. I wonder if it hurts every day, all the time.

I`m not an expert but I thinks it hurts constantly while there is a flare up. Then it goes away and can come back again.
Well, yes they do if the gout is not treated, however, acute gout should settle and be painless if treated within a fortnight.
However gout can be a precursor to chronic arthritis and the pain may well be persistent.
That's right, 237. Mr T has gout flare ups. Agony for a few days, then it peters out.

237sj, so between flares, there's no pain?

Tilly2, sqad, thanks. Feeling better about it now.
Superiorfeline. My late brother in law was a renal failure patient and he had gout a couple of times. Terrible pain (where he couldn't even stand the weight of the duvet on his feet at night) but then it went away and he was alright again.
It is extremely painful. I hope it clears soon. What medication is he taking?
no, it usually comes and goes for no particular reason; sometimes it hurts more than others. It's more likely to affect older men (and women). It can be treated, though, as Sqad says, and pretty much prevented altogether.
Yes, a crystal arthropathy such as gout is a painful condition and an acuty gouty flare can cause considerably reduced mobility due to the level of pain it confers.
