I have had a letter, out of the blue, from Customer Refund Service, advising me to claim for PPI. It seems genuine enough and I have rung them to try and see how genuine they sound. Does anybody think this may be a scam and should I be careful divulging anything to them ? My mortgage was taken out in the 80's, so doubt I'd be able to claim anyway. Has anybody else had such a letter ? TIA.

Going out now.

https://www.resolver.co.uk/rights-guide/ppi-reclaim Don’t use a claims company. Use the above site that is sponsored by Martin Lewis’ MSE site. It is totally free and all you need is the name of your bank/building society/credit card. Use the template and press “send.” The institution will be contacted for you and they Have to reply.

They take a lot of commission if your claim is successful. You can claim yourself and it will have cost you nothing if your claim is unsuccessful.

Loads of places want to encourage you to pay them to claim PPI. Doesn't mean you have it, but they're hoping you'll bite and let them check. Your choice, but better you contact someone than they contact you.
I've heard rumours that the next big "mis-selling" scandal will be centred around those firms who have encouraged people to use their services if they suspect they have been mis-sold PPI.
If "Customer Refund Service" is the name of a company that specialises in PPI claims then avoid them and make a claim yourself. This information, from the Government-funded Money Advice Service, explains how to go about it:

However if the 'Customer Refund Service' is actually part of the bank or building society that provided you with your mortgage, go ahead with their service. (That would seem to be unlikely though if they're not already in possession of all the relevant information).

I got a letter, out of the blue, from what looked like just another PPI firm touting for business. I ignored it for several months, partly because although I'd had PPI I didn't think that it had actually been mis-sold to me. I then took another look at the letter and, after a bit of web-searching, I realised that it had come from the American bank which had taken over the credit card company I'd used. It invited me to go online and enter a reference number to see if I could claim. I did so purely out of curiosity, expecting to be confronted with lots of questions I couldn't answer. Instead I immediately got a message saying "Thank you for submitting your claim, which we will process within the next few weeks". 3 weeks later I received a cheque for around £3000!

Thank you all for your very sound and interesting advice. I may now go ahead and do it myself.

£3,000 - well done Buenchico x
If it is just from a claims company it is just a phishing trip. You'll still end up providing lots of info - names of all banks/financial institutions you've had dealings with. They'll then send off their standard letter to them all. If you know or think you may have had PPI with one it's simple to do it yourself and you'll keep all of it. I know of some people who found the claims firm took every penny (because of some small print)

Yes, it is just a claims company ff. Worried at first it may have been a scam !
It's unlikely they will knowanything about the accounts/policies you have had. If you had PPI you should remember but one way is for you to look at your credit record for a list of all the financial services companies you did business with
Question Author
That's just it ff, I don't remember, but I've read many instances where people don't remember and then get a lump sum ! It doesn't seem too difficult to do it myself, so I may go down that route now.

Thanks Chrissa.
None of these links work for me. I can read them but if I click on any links I just get a blank screen.
ummm, when the blank screen comes up press F5 to refresh it - it might bring the page up :)
