Many thanks to everyone who had a go. We raised over £500 towards our big project: to provide water and toilets for the schools in Hastings SL. See www.hastingshastings.org.uk for the winners and the answers-with-explanations. [No 56 caused problems for lots of quizzers: Saintly sinner? - Cut it out! (7). The answer was PIROGUE. ‘Clipper’ didn’t parse well at all. ]

how was pi parsed for saintly?
Mally, Pi is an abbreviation for pious/saintly

The OED simply says "Brit. informal short for PIOUS"
So where did the “cut it out” bit come in?
Pirogues are traditionally cut out from one single log.
Flat bottomed boat - a 'dug out'.
