Jesus Is Not A Good Example To Follow

Just so that I don't highjack another's post....
Why is Jesus held in high esteem?
Anyone that has read the gospels with a critical eye (as opposed to the eye of faith) will see that Jesus is the antithesis of a moral human being.
He disobeys his parents and tells us that if we were to be his disciple that we have to hate our own parents.
He tells us that he hasn't come to bring peace but to divide families one against the other.
He compares a gentile that asks for his help to a dog.
He whips temple servants for selling merchandise.
He curses a tree for not bearing fruit when it was out of season (bizarre to say the least)
He condemns his enemies to eternal torture while telling the rest of us to forgive them...bit two faced if you ask me.
The list goes on. The Jesus that the gospel writers portrayed was not a decent human being.

Nailit, YOU brought the House of Lords up to make a point - it wasn't much of one and didn't go anywhere. How can that be 'turning a post on its head'? I didn't ignore your point - if that was 'why is Jesus held in high esteem?', I'm still waiting for something to back that up as it's not something I've ever experienced.
I'm right in thinking that you used to be a christian though Nails? Genuinely interested in how and why your 'epiphany' ( ha, I got another pun in - go me :) that it's all rubbish came about, were you brought up in a religious environment or find it and then 'lose' it again?

HOW is Jesus held in high esteem? It's something I have no experience of in my normal life. I know a few people who believe in Jesus and they have never told me that he was flawless. The 'Jesus is not a good example to follow' heading is totally irrelevant to the vast number of people who are not convinced of his existence in the first place.

A myth has been perpetuated by the church around the man Jesus, one that portrays him not only as the Son of God, and God incarnate, but as a perfect example. Most Christians, like those of other religions, believe what their teachers tell them, and read the bits of the story they’re told to read, without ever venturing further into the texts and with a critical eye. They never know that Jesus was at times angry, selfish, and arrogant. From beginning to end, pathos is paramount. From the poor little baby Jesus born in a stable, persecuted throughout his life, and finally tortured and crucified, it’s a tale that tugs at the heartstrings. In my opinion the story of Jesus, as it is generally accepted, is the greatest lie ever told.

I became a Christian of the 'born again', evangelical type when I was a young teenager Kval. I had a faith in God and Jesus. I believed that the Holy Bible was the inerrant, inspired word of God. I believed in Bible Prophecy. I evangelized others in the hope of bringing them to salvation. In short, I was pretty much like Theland.
However, as a teenager I was an avid reader so when I became a Christian it was only natural that my reading material consisted of not only the Bible but books on theology, Bible commentaries, church history, biographes of famous Christians and apologetic works. As I read and reread the Bible I began to find it harder to reconcile the contradictions within it, I also began to realise that what was preached from the pulpit and taught in bible classes was very different from what the Bible actually said. So I read even deeper in an attempt to keep hold onto my faith. I eventually began to read 'heretical' literature...books that the church didn't like you to read...to try to get a balanced view on things. I eventually had to come to the conclusion (as painful as it was) that my faith rested on a delusion.
