Hope someone can help me, although this perhaps not the sort of technological question usually posed on here - I thought that my Humax box should only start recording when it received a signal indicating that the programme was about to start, but I don't know how many times It's recorded 45 minutes of football (or tennis, or snooker) & 15 minutes of the programme I wanted! Yesterday the schedules were changed to include a tribute to June Whitfield, so instead of University challenge I got 30 minutes of a Raymond Briggs film - I haven't checked yet to see whether the Raymond Briggs profile is there. It's also not unusual for the opening minute or two of programmes to be missed.

I found this in the user manual which does support your understanding of how the recording works:

Freeview+ HD explained:
• Accurate recording
The start and end times of scheduled recordings will track the signal meaning the recording will start and stop at
the times sent by the broadcasters. If a programme starts early or runs late the record time will automatically be
adjusted to record the whole programme.

But at the bottom of the page it states:
Note: The above Freeview+ HD features are available on channels where the correct and accurate data is being
broadcast. Some channels may not support all of the Freeview+ HD services.
For more information on Freeview+ HD please visit http://www.freeview.co.uk/HD.

So it seems the channels you have problems with do not support this feature
My recording of University Challenge also failed, mine on a Panasonic recorder, so I assume the start/stop information was not broadcast.
Hopefully the missed programmes will be on catch up tv :)

you're lucky, it's the last two minutes of programmes that i miss if i can't record the following programme :-(

"The computer says NO" ;-)
On my Humax I can add 'padding time' to the beginning and end of programmes. I've got the end padded out by five minutes which does seem to work most times. I haven't got any padding time at the beginning and it's 99% ok. Go into 'settings' and see if the padding time is ok, first, then perhaps you might need to re-load everything as if you were starting from scratch. Good luck.

Thanks for your answers - we have added time to the beginning & end, but we still have problems. The channel I had trouble with yesterday was BBC2, &I'm using Freesat, not Freeview - does that make a difference?
That'll be it, Bogtrotter. Your machine will only record at the preset times with freesat so if there is a programme change you're snookered.
I have a basic Logik box which I use for recording programmes. It works well, except that I, too, find when I set it to record when I'm not in, it nearly always misses the first 3 or 4 minutes of the programme. When looking at the programme guide you can see that the lines dividing the programmes do not exactly line up below the times they should start - very frustrating!
