Especially those who destroy lives? This one was fined what looks like a relatively low amount because this was not premeditated...but still because of him - someone’s life has been altered forever.

GGGRRR..had it been a motorist would the fine etc be the same ? ... some cyclists really need their bikes crushing..this attitude that "we can go anywhere, anytime" really has to be dealt with...
There's nothing to stop the cyclist being sued for damages on top of the fine but, without compulsory insurance, there's little chance of getting any money out of him.
As the maximum for this offence is a fine of £2,500 there is not a lot more the court could have done.
I'd have crushed his bike !!

Perhaps cyclists with home insurance could be sued under the liability clause, and those with home insurance would have to take out insurance?
Maybe the courier firms should be made to take out insurance cover for their couriers.

That might give victims some compensation, but The problem of rogue cyclists would still exist.
all bikes should have a number plate..pay road tax and be accountable like motorists... with the exception of minors..who really should not be on a main thoroughfare in any case
sp, some time ago there was a documentary about the courier services in London.Apparently the cyclists are set time limits for delivery of their packages and the way they cycled through the streets was frightening.
When this sort of thing happens I think an add on to any sentence should be they have to care for the victim while they recover from thier injuries.
Wouldn't happen if cycling in public places was banned.
As a poor alternative one might consider compulsory insurance and apply road fund licence, but the problem there is one's making it more difficult to ban later when the penny finally drops about how unreasonable it is to allow such life threatening risk taking to oneself to occur.
I think more important than road fund licence (although I agree with that) is a test, and a driving licence; and insurance for the rider and registration plates for bikes. Cyclists should be able to be made accountable for their mistakes and that includes a bam or prison, the same as car and motorcycle drivers.
not bam, ban
we need to start enforcing the law more often. Cycling on the pavement and ignoring red lights are now endemic. I think foreigners, when they visit, actually believe it is legal to cycle on the pavement. In case in the OP he should have been jailed for 5 years IMHO.
