If someone started to wake about 4 or 5 in the morning and, having immediate thoughts of decrepitude or death (with crushing anxiety) , starts drinking, could that be DTs?

The symptoms are many and varied and of course include those you have mentioned and more.
"could that be DTs?"

Yes it could...providing of coarse that you have been for years, a very heavy drinkers and that you stopped drinking a couple of days ago.

I am no expert.
Sleep paralysis?
erm - - - well njingdoing any of this

of course not - DTs is from acute abstinence not drinking
and yes I have seen it - you are getting the label ( DTs) and making the diagnosis fit even tho a leading sign is absent ( hallucinations )

the leading sign here is anxiety innit early morning waking and anxiety
see a doctor rather than trying to do this yourself with well meaning help from various walk-ins
// njingdoing//

not doing ..... ssozza
ignore as needed
