A while ago I asked for alternatives for OFFICE that wouldn't cost me £50 per year and was told about Open office . I downloaded it and was fine with it until just recently when I wanted to print a document that I had downloaded. When I printed it off all I got was a load of gobbledegook that I didnt understand . I noticed that now I want to get the down load a box pops up that didn't before asking about language etc that wasn't there before . I'm a it slow so cannot work out what I am doing wrong. Is there another alternative .Please

Did you try printing he document after opening it in Open Office ? If you sent it straight to the printer, then I would exect a lot of gobbledegook as it will contain formatting stuff that the printer wouldn't know anything about as well as possibly compressed text if it is in .docx format.

As for free alternatives to OO, if it's just a word processor you need you could try Ableword which you can find out about at http://www.ableword.net/

If you need a spreadsheet an/or presentation software as well you could try Softmaker Free Office 2018 from https://www.freeoffice.com/en/

Softmaker do want an email adress to register it and they do send emails either offering extra fonts and occasional discounts on their full blown product, but the free version does include pretty much everything most people need in terms of day to day use.
I used OpenOffice for years but now much prefer this

Libre Office is better than Open Office.

They are very similar but Libre Office was spun off from Open Office in 2010 (it was based on the same product code) and is now being regularly updated.

Note there is a free Microsoft Office online which you can use.

You need to logon with a Microsoft email address

Not used it much so not sure how good it is to be honest

Web site here (note even though this says Word you can select other office products once you are signed in)
