Vw R Wing Mirror

My son drives the above and has just set off to football match and his wing mirror was working perfectly - then all of a sudden it's gone black. Anybody know anything about this please.

Do you mean a type R Golf or right hand side wing mirror ?. The glass has turned Black or has the indicator ( built into the mirror ) stopped working ?.
