System Restore Chore

It seems about once a year I have to do a system restore on my laptop (I use F11), as when I put in my password I get a message saying something like "user profile failed the log on". The fixes I've seen online look a bit scary (using F11 is scary enough for me!) - does anyone know of an easier fix?
Also, when I did it today, I was only able to take it back a few months. Is there a way to be offered a date further back if it doesn't appear with the Restore wizard?
