Hi, I have PC running Win 8.1 with (classic Win 7 shell?) so it's more like 7 which I much prefer. I.E. Browser. I haven't installed updates for ages (blush) too much else going and I have just left it.

Question is can I pick and choose now what to install, say like the last couple months without going through the whole lot? It's just that I think I.E. is playing up re some site certificates or that's what I think.

Appreciate any helpful comments and thanks in advance if you can give me some ideas.

Go into Windows Update settings and change to install only those you select/
It is time to ditch IE.

Microsoft are no longer updating it (they have replaced it in Windows 10) and it has been an unsafe browsers for years.

Get Chrome or Firefox (you can use either or both without having to uninstall IE)
If you have Windows then you cannot uninstall IE.
The problem with selecting only SOME updates is that you may be missing out on some security patches.

Note that 8.1 is now pretty old and scammers and hackers LIKE targeting old versions of Windows as often people DONT install fixes and leave themselves wide open.

Also note that when Microsoft publish a security fix they detail what the issue was (how hackers were able to gain access to Windows).

So hackers read these issues and write viruses etc TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE SECURITY HOLES.

So by not installing all the updates you are leaving yourself wide open.

I know it is a pain but turn your computer on when you are NOT using it and just keep installing ALL the updates until Windows says "Windows is up to date"

Then you know you are fairly safe.

Note Windows 8.1 is no longer supported by Microsoft (no more fixes) so you should really try to get off it.

For gawd sake

I KNOW that. I was saving the user thinking they had to uninstall IE if they installed Chrome or Firefox.

It is called trying to save a user thinking they have to uninstall IE if they install a different browser (which some users do)

I have worked in PC technical support for decades so often try to pre empt possible problems or follow up questions to save the user having to ask further questions and us answer them.

Hi, didn't know it was going to be sooo bad for me because not updated. Dannyk I have it already set to recommend updates and ask me but my bad I've not done it. Oh dear.

Guilbert..thank you I appreciate your forward thinking as I do that a lot to prevent probs in lots of things. Seems 1,000 megabytes will take some time to download.... Eek... It's a difficult situation for me.

Is this why I am getting certificate not in date on my banking on line? Thanks for all comments.
I have Windows 8.1 and Windows installs automatically. They offered me Windows 10 when it came available,i downloaded it but after a while i didn't like it so i uninstalled it again. I love my Windows 8.1 and just disabled the bit for to install Windows 10

candys....now I wish I'd done that from the start... automatic updates, I used to on my XP. It's just that there 43 important updates recommended but I don't want any more probs if I just let them go ahead. Mainly because I have personal problems here and to I cannot del with everything. X
Dunn..you're best downloading the important ones first-just let your computer get on with it.Then you'll probably have other updates but if you've not made your mind up about these ones you can read the descriptions of what they entail before ticking the boxes if they apply to you-or just 'disable' them.
You could always go do some shopping,or have something to eat while the downloads are going on-time will pass quicker for you.
