AVAST ran a diagnostic check on my laptop which showed my hard drive's health at 50%.
1. What does this mean?
2.Can anything be done to improve it?
Plain English please, I am a technophobe.

I think, get someone PC savvy to look at it for you.

It's booked in for a new hard drive etc next Tuesday,Thanks for trying.
I'm confused because I've never heard of Avast checking hard drives and I can't find any relevant Google references to it doing so.

Run CHKDSK to see if it finds any problems:

Don't forget to ask for your old drive back so that you can be sure it's disposed of securely.
Also, as I said earlier, think about increasing the size of disc or replacing it with SSD - either option is no more work, so the extra cost will only be for the different disc.

I contacted Avast about getting a freeze-up while running a full virus check. The technician ran a diagnostic check which revealed the 50% health of my hard drive.
