I need to press a button on the shower unit to start it.
If it was stuck in the off position I'd need to get it fixed. Is it safe to leave it as it is?

As long as it is switched off at the shower it should be ok. Need to get it fixed soonest though. (I think it's a legal requirement.)

OK, thanks.
More expense. :-(
If one is able bodied it is simple job to replace it with a new one, remembering to cut the power off first of course.
I've encountered a similar problem several times with pull switches. On every occasion I've been able to fix the problem just by tightening the screw-in bit within the switch housing.

Turn the power off. Unscrew the switch cover. Look for where the bit at the top of the cord connects to the rest of the switch. It's a screw connection and probably just need tightening by hand.
