Many thanks for the replies, folks. I suppose I must be wrong but "pils" seems unfair to me - a trade name surely has no place in a cryptic crossword. Same point probably applies to hastings - more general knowledge than cryptic, I should have thought. Perhaps it`s time I gave up fooling about with crosswords.

Not a trade name.
Pilsner (also pilsener or simply pils) is a type of pale lager. It takes its name from the Bohemian city of Pilsen, where it was first produced in 1842.[1] The world’s first blond lager, the original Pilsner Urquell,[2] is still produced there today.

Chris. Pils is not a trade name it is a type of lager.I agree with you to some extent about Hastings but the clue was cryptic.
