I've just helped my friend download OpenOffice, and it works beautifully. However, when you go to File then Print, although it recognises her printer (HP ENVY 4520) it just will not print.
I've tried going to Options/Tools/Print but that gives no option to, for example, set that printer to be default printer. The printer works fine from her iPad. Anyone please have any ideas what the problem might be?
Very frustrating, especially after my extolling the virtues of OpenOffice to her - no good writing documents if you can't then print them out if you want to!

One thing to check . . . if "Notes Only" under "Notes" has been set.
If yes . . . change it to "None" and see if printing occurs?

Ta, F. Where is Notes, not familiar with it?
Aah . . . that may only refer to printing "notes" on powerpoint slides. Your problem might be more general and it is suggested that a check is made to see if the most up to date printer drivers are installed or trying to re-install the printer drivers again.
Printing is controlled by the operating system, not the application. When you tell OpenOffice to print, it simply passes the task to Windows itself. Have you tried going in to Devices and Printers from the Windows Start Menu and Choosing the default printer, and printing a test page?

Hmmm thought it might be something like that. Don't fancy doing that on someone else's computer, though!
I know that in Word etc. (Not Open Office I know) if there is no printer available the first time you try to print it will create a PDF and then keep on doing that. I assume that when you select print, the printer is available and selected? If so, what then happens when you hit enter?

Hi all, just back home. I think the problem might be that the iPad(which my friend usually uses to print things) which was switched on and near the printer was 'commandeering' the printer, and the printer was confused that two computers were trying to access it?
Doubt your thought about the ipad.

Have you checked the cables between the printer and the computer?

Have you looked at the print queue on the computer?

Try printing something from Wordpad/Notepad or even Paint

Having had a chance to do some research, it seems this is a fairly common problem when you download OpenOffice - the computer recognises the printer, but the printer doesn't recognise OpenOffice as the printer was set up before OO was downloaded.

I think the answer will be to uninstall the printer, then reinstall it. I'll need to see if my friend wants me to have a go at this as it's her computer, but am I right in thinking it would be a straightforward thing to do, and not risky?
