Some religions ( and some R&S posters) postulate that hell is a just and final destination for unbelievers.
Apart from the obvious (eternal punishment for finite sins is unjust) can anyone conceive of a more sick doctrine in religion than that unbelievers will be tortured beyond belief...for eternity...for simply believing something different?

All religions have their own ideas of hell but even the Christians that I know have a hard time with this and struggle to cope with it.
(I actually know one Christian who lost his son to drug OD and cracked up after, with the thought that his son was burning in hell)
This idea that people will be tortured/burned for all eternity for the sin of not believing in the right God is one sick doctrine.

Anyone comfortable with the idea of eternal torture?

...but what happens when the dictorships realise that most people have woken up and not taking/ believing this rubbish anymore??
nailit //...reminding Theland about what his Bible actually teaches might push HIM over the edge.//

Nah, Theland has gone over the other edge where the devoted abrogate their responsibility for thought and completely lose sight of what the Bible (substitute Quran, Torah, Mein Kampf as appropriate) actually teaches.

The presumption of righteousness is afforded to the doctrine and everything is seen though that filter.
Another one of my Biblical favourites is the punishment handed out by God to all women for eternity by increased pain in childbirth, because the first woman led her husband to disobey God's law of the "Forbidden Fruit".

That's right, by being born female my granddaughters not only serve punishments for the wrongs committed for four generations before them, they will be suffering their contribution for a single mistake made by one woman who lived thousands of years ago.
2 Kings: 23-24 (New Testament)
23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.

I would prefer he got out of town too.
beso, so true..here's a quote that really funny, well the summary is

The apologetics, in fenders link, shows just how many mental gymnastics religionists have to perform to justify their sick bible stories.
And it completely ignores just how TWO bears coulld possibly maul FORTY TWO kids (or young adults). Were they in an enclosure or something or simply waiting for their turn to be ripped apart. Personally, the minute I saw my friends been mauled I'd run like hell...

i found the link funny, because elisha asked god to punish his tormentors, but god took offence because they did not believe in him.
so elisha still suffers from a bald patch, and there's the ten plagues
also women must suffer because of eve, joshua and all his smitings.
glorious revelry in murder...thine will be done.
The Bible promises that the truth will be veiled from unbelievers.
//The Bible promises that the truth will be veiled from unbelievers. //

The truth is veiled from anyone who either hasn't read it - or has read it selectively.

No doubt God disabled them so they couldn't run away.

So how do unbelievers become believers then? More absurdity!

//No doubt God disabled them so they couldn't run away.//
Ah yes. That'll be the reason. The bible doesn't say that, but will be the reason.

How on Earth anyone can believe in this trash is beyond me....
You have trouble believing? Then give up. Don't try.
nailit //How on Earth anyone can believe in this trash is beyond me....//

They are terrified that life would be pointless because it ends. This is instilled into the believers psyche by all churches as soon as possible.

Once invested in the eternal life deal, they have to keep believing because the alternative means they have wasted a huge chunk of their non-eternal life by subscribing to the myth.

And like the victims of a Nigerian scam they invest even more in convincing themselves that they have not been tricked. This is the primary reason Theland puts so much effort here. Pretty sad really.

But it is never too late to wake up.
