I recall the Honourable Artillery Company setting up their 25 pounders at the The Tower of London for a birthday salute. As the appointed minute,on the hour, the battery commander ordered "fire" A Thames pleasure steamer had docked not 25 metres away and the tourists were disembarking down the companionway. The blast nearly blew them into he Thames and they were covered in soot and smouldering wadding.
You don't see anything specific. One moment there's a bird, the next a cloud of smoke. Likely it is an ex-bird, but not impossible it was blown out of sight instead. One of the comments suggested that they fire blanks, which makes sense as you don't want a cannonball ending up where it ought not.
I like the tradition of firing live shells across the city centre, OG.
