Could someone please explain a couple of answers for me. 17a Major formerly in English that is going back (5) EIGN? I assume this is eigne meaning first born. 27a Early arrival having nosy look around front of mansion? (5) PREM? I assume this is PREMY with the word play of pry around m but that doesn't explain the 'e'. Any ideas welcome. Thanks

17 Eng (english) and ie (that is) All reversed
17a eigne (formerly/archaic) first-born as an elder son might be described as Smith major (at public School for instance)
ENG(lish)+ IE (that is) reversed
27 Pry round em (the sound ofm)
27 EM (letter M spelled out)

Thank you Cashier and Calibax. I should have got the Major answer as I remember being Henderson minor at my prep school. I think em is pretty weak unless sound is included in the clue.
Em isn’t the sound it is how m is spelt.
