On my Kindle fire, I only get the adverts when logging in. And on my paperwhite, I must be honest, I've yet to see an advert.
Not intrusive in my opinion. I love my Kindles, the only buy bear with me is the charging port, on one especially. Goes in on a slant and is loose, so I sometimes don't find it charged, so have to check on it!
What are the 'special' offers bednobs?
Like a lot of tablets and phones they have a fair amount of bloatware. Amazon dont trust us to use only whatwe need so they preload everything. Maybe they can be rooted so the carp can be thinned out.

special offers are ads that supposedly appear on the lock screen. It makes a big difference I to the price
It makes a difference of £10, I believe, and you can pay that after purchase if you do get sick of the ads.
The ads are mainly 'recommendations' for further reading.

I much prefer my Kobo
Have a Kindle Paperwhite and don't get any adverts. Why would you need a waterproof one bednobs? Just being nosy.
Reading in the bath, I guess
A waterproof one is handy for those prone to 'PMSL' when reading humorous tomes.
