As so often now many clues are not literary. Tiddlers three please.
Former excitement is something to celebrate in best poem by Suffolk writer(4,6)I have the first word Late and A.s.o. for the second.
A book like Primary Colors,or maybe John Berger’s G(3,5) .e. Novel.
Knock off wife and young girl endlessly? That’s Falstaff’s dirty linen (6)s.w.a.
Am open to correction with my conclusions thus far of course.

Thanks. I can’t make anything of the Berger clue. New novel is more to do with French writers like Georges Perec. There is a connection which eludes me and as usual it’s a tiddler.
Both books are shown with red covers and as cover doesn't fit that was the next best thing/think.
Sorry not to be more helpful, maybe someone else has a better thought.

I try to finish, put pen down and move on.

Ingenious connection but it should be more than visual I guess. Will think again on the morrow. Enjoying a programme about Frankie Howerd too much to think about the clue.
John Berger was a Marxist - could this explain it?
That crossed my mind but I didn't dwell on it - good thought.
Question Author
But Red Novel isn’t a particularly common expression,is it?
No - but it could describe “primary colours” or a book by a Marxist ....
Question Author
Guess so. Sorry to be so grudging but I really think it’s a crap clue.
That's if we are right with that answer, happy to find out what it is if it's something else.
Question Author
Agreed. And thanks.
Question Author
Ready to concede the answer and sorry if I still sound grudging but in terms of a Venn diagram there’s about 5% overlap between the two clues. Still sounds like Broteas did this one in a hurry. Thanks to one and all(not Broteas!)for picking away the layers.
Key Novel - Primary Colors is a Roman á clef and 'G' is a key.
I'll add a '?' in case I sounded over confident.
Key Novel it was.
