Could the PM be imagining the sound of knives being honed as she prepares for the Tory conference?

I think she's been hearing that sound for a while now.
She has heard little else for the last year. But I don’t think Boris, or anyone else, wants her job until she’s done their work for them and got them through Brexit. He ran away last time the position was up for grabs.

I don’t know if “lean” is the mot juste.

Plump and hungry wouldn't sit right, either.
Intriguing, but I did read somewhere that the reason Boris ran away last time is that he has a huge skeleton in his cupboard which Gove threatened to reveal should Boris stand. I would love to know what it is.

Was that his affair with a woman half his age?
Which one, sandyRoe?

My guess is that he wants the job for the glory, not the hard work, which Brexit will be. He’ll be sharpening his knife again in about 2022, when the work is done and everyone is blaming her.
An interesting poll of Tory voters show a majority want the PM to lead the party into the next election.
Johnson is seen as even more of a liability than Rees Mogg. I think personally it’s got to the stage where some MPs might sooner see Jeremy Corbyn lead the party than BJ who I must say I’ve never associated with ‘lean and hungry looking’ : fat and foolish more like
I didn’t mean ‘majority’ ; ‘largest number’ rather
But she isn't getting anyone through Brexit, she's desperately trying to avoid it save in name.
