Holiday 2019?

My youngest son has just told us he's going off with his friends family next year on holiday.
Yipee! for the first time in around 25 years OH & I can go on holiday on our own. We both like sun sea swimming etc but don't want all inclusive or waterparks and screaming kids ( sorry to those who have screaming kids but we've been there done that now want some peace & quiet)
We like places you can walk around market squares on an evening, go to places of interest but has an accessible beach. Most of all we want somewhere different as over the years we've done the holiday hot spots but have steered clear of more interesting places with fear of boring the kids.
Any suggestions, especially specific resorts or hotels would be lovely. I won't stay in anything below 4* that's not being snobby I just want luxury on a holiday. No long haul , I can only manage up to 5 hours on a plane. Many Thanks.

Anyway how about Northern Spain? Many people go to Southern Spain and ignore Northern Spain. Much less touristy and milder weather (parts of it look like Britain with lush grass and many trees...

Not really. The hotels we stayed at were pretty average. I went for location as the bus station was 2 mins away.
It might have change now but you could get a day bus pass for about £1.30 and they's take you all over the Island.
There was a really nice 5* hotel in St Pauls but I can't remember it's name.

Dalyan Resort Hotel. Very nice. Adults only pool at one side.

I love Malta. I have stayed their about 9 times from the 80s forwards. San Pawl, Buggiba is where I stay when I go minus memsahib. Hope to buy a small villa ,when she returns from USA, in the fishing village of Marsallox. Pronounced Marsa Schlok. Every Sunday a large market for a half mile around the port.Quite a big market around the walls of Valetta as well near the Islands main bus terminus.
We are staying at a 4* star called Seabank Resort and Spa at Mellehia over Christmas and New Year. First time in 42 years that my wife and I haven't had to entertain the family,prepare and cook meals and supply booze etc over Xmas.
Loads of History in Malta from Romans,Phonecians,Barbary pirates,French ( for a little while until the Knights of John kicked their arrises out)The 1942 seige and blitz of Malta.Fantastic place and great people but not the prettiest of Islands. Not a lot of sun baked sands but it is like marmite. The history is worth a visiot alone if you like that sort of thing. Good hunting and bon voyage.

I like the fact that Malta doesn't have many sand beaches. The rocks are smooth so not uncomfy to sit on.
I thought it was beautiful. Although some of the paths could do with a few repairs (I'm very clumsy)I loved Valletta and Mdina. The market was nice but a little bit crowded.
I had a funny experience in Malta. My OH popped in to a restaurant to have a wee. He came out and said 'there's a bloke in there who looks just like your brother-in-law' and it was my BIL!!

Budapest is a lovely city, we go there regularly. We stay at a self catering apartment house about £45 per night.
