This is an old phone of mine, which I would like to give to my Son, problem is the pattern lock is not working, Its not because I am putting in the wrong pattern it wont let me make any pattern, any ideas what problem could be? tia

All I can suggest is trying a factory reset. It's normally a 'last resort' measure, as it wipes all your data (including contacts, messages, pictures and videos) off the phone but, as you're giving the phone away, it might be just what you want to do anyway.

Thank you for the link, problem is the phone wont shut down for some reason until I put in the pattern, catch 22

Try a simple reboot then first. Press and hold the power and volume-down buttons simultaneously for around 7 seconds.
