My Dad has just gone into remission from stage 3 bladder cancer, however recently he has been told that he has a GIST 3cm lesion in his stomach, the lesion is hard. he is awaiting the results of the biopsy in the next two week, how likely is this to be malignant?

More guesses here i am afraid. Who mentioned the term GIST? If that is confirmed then it is unlikely to be malignant and have nothing to do with his bladder cancer. Are we talking about a "medical " stomach or a "laymen's" stomach? If it is the former, then it is unlikely to be malignant BUT if it is in the abdomen , it could be in the liver, peritoneum or anywhere.

The biopsy will reveal all.

My guess.......it is unlikely to be malignant based on the information that you have given.

You will have to bear with me, My mum sent me a hurried message of what was written on the endoscopy report, she has a tendency to get words mixed up and/or not notice auto correct. This is what she sent:

The 3cm lesion seen on the c t scan appears to to gist in the in the cardiac pillow sign not present the mass is hard3 biopsies from the same site taken hospital says they are not always helpful they will refer to uni MDT for discussion with a view to proceed to E U S with F N A if appropria
Thanks Purist....."GIST" is either a medical term OR a typo for "just" which makes more sense.

I would have thought even more so, that the "lump" I NOT associated with his bladder cancer and is not cancerous.

Look forward to hearing the result of the biopsy.

Thanks Sqad, I will post the results when I get them!
A GIST as in a gastrointestinal stromal tumour?

Highly unlikely to be related to the bladder Ca but a GIST is a known gastric cancer.

Could it be a clerical error - perhaps a CYST? Errors can occur when transcribing / audio typing.
Further thoughts ...

If they're referring this to the MDT to discuss an EUS and FNA, they're most certainly treating this as a suspected GI malignancy. Sorry to put a dampener on things, Purist.
erm - yeah and on a point of order
GIST is associated with transitional cell of bladder
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25930983

rock hard makes it pretty unlikely to be a cyst
and of course they dont biopsy without reason

but dont despair ! I had ca colon 1999 and then an associated lymphoma ( 5% - but clearly 100% for me) - 2012
and er I'm not using a ouija board !
EUS - exam under sedation ?

FNA - fine needle aspiration ? - how science progresses .....
did the papers say that the doctors should write clearly ?

hmmm, interesting, I am worried to be honest because he is losing a lot of weight and struggles with eating, he has persistent indigestion and stomach pain. The consultant also mentioned he has a spot on his lung, I am not sure if they are going to investigate this yet, they were more concerned about the lump in his stomach.
sorry have nothing to add ..but know how worrying this is for you..have been through all this with dad..wish him and you both well..a difficult and stressful time... thinking of you xx
Losing a lot of weight and difficulty eating are concerning features, Purist. With regard to the lung nodule, it wouldn't pay to speculate at this point.
Mrs ZM had a Gist. We were first told it wasn’t malignant but following the post removal biopsy we were told it was but very early stages.

Not much of an update as yet, its been almost 2 weeks since the scope and biopsy, apparently he has to have another endoscopy on October 3rd to take out fluid from the growth he will also see his consultant on the same day. I think if it was something bad they would see him earlier?
Fluid from the growth?

Did anyone mention "ascites"?
Question Author
no, well my mum has not mentioned it, I was hoping this lump might be a cyst of some kind?
It's impossible to say until the histology comes back.

I do hope you get good news.
I think it is best you wait for all the results. I know it is difficult but it sounds like they are suspicious that the lump (s) are possibly cancer either new primaries or secondary spread and you shouldn't discount this but they have to eliminate the worst options before they can tell what is going on. Even if it is a worse case scenario it is likely some sort of treatment will be offered. I hope it is something simple and curable.
