Yes, three time - and in one very pleasuable experience being the forean I was able to decalre Guilty 10 time s to some fraudulent cheque scouser.

Yes I think you're right, Jim. The hurdle for conviction is very high and it would be useful to have "We know you did it but there isn't quite enough evidence to send you down" :-)
Surely most 'not guilty' verdicts where there is only two options, are going to be, 'unconvinced either way' verdicts really.
