A Warning

Mrs B was walking slowly across our carpeted room last night when she tripped and fell.

She broke her wrist, and combined with my disabilities, it took some time getting her upright again.

She’ll be one-armed for many weeks to come.

We will cope, of course; we always do.

But be warned, all you ABers who aren’t as young as you once were!

Thanks for the good wishes, and the practical suggestions - I'll be looking at them.

No, no great wish to stay in London - although we'd miss the ready access to so many takeaways!

My disabilities are partial sight, one leg, and general physical debility. Mrs B has none, usually, so the absence of her arm (right arm at that) has come as a shock.

I was cycling up to a year or so back, but the thought of breaking an arm/wrist in my case would be awful - I use my two big strong arms for so much (couldn't get on/off a toilet with one arm!) - so the bike is getting rusty.

That's tough bainbrig. You were cycling a year ago, what happened to your leg? Big wake up call this happening to you. How long has your wife been given for her wrist to get back to normal? If you need help as time goes by, don't be proud, ask.

I really feel for you Bill, I hope Mrs B heels soon.
It's the shake it gives you which hits you more than the injury itself sometimes.

My Mum broke her arm and leg in December and although is now physically better, is really shaken, she won't let me leave the house without her in case she falls when I'm out so I have to drag her places she really doesn't want to go but is too scared to stay indoors.
Obviously I'm worried sick of her doing it again so am constantly on edge.

I do hope she makes a mental recovery as well as physical.

My best wishes to you too, I know how hard it is to cope when your not at your best yourself.

Mrs B is coping, as she always does. But extremely frustrated, and inevitably trying to do everything(!), trying not to ‘be a burden’.

Eleena: the leg went years ago, it’s just that I started to worry about the burden I would be on Mrs B if I fell off and broke an arm! Loving each other for half a century always ends in tears - how else can it?

reading this with interest, Bill, as we're in the same position, getting older and sicker (but then, who isn't?). Just checked my "heart age" and the results weren't entirely encouraging.

jno: I've been reading similar health scares for many years, to the point where I take less notice than I used to...

On the topic of Sheltered Housing, it's surprisingly difficult to Google effectively. Plenty of local-authority-linked places, but as owners rather than renters, far less. And when they DO come up, they tend to think you're exceedingly wealthy, prices starting up from £400K+.

What I want, I suppose, is some central agency where you can put in all your wants and assets and get recommendations. Any ideas?

Start with a local estate agent. They will be able to give you a fairly accurate idea of the value of your flat ( you could be pleasantly surprised) and will also have contacts with regard to private concierged accommodation. Best part of this idea is its totally free.

Be careful with the company with initials M and S - they are extremely expensive and very difficult to sell on ( so I've been told). Mine cost £162,000 four years ago - Leicestershire. Leasehold.
