What Exactly, Is A Kodi Box?

At the risk of sounding stupid, I have to ask as I am not up to speed with technology and things. Could someone explain please, in detail, and how do I get one if suitable for me?

As that article makes clear, Kodi boxes are (per se) entirely legal but the big attraction for many (most?) users of them is that they can have software added which makes it possible to view subscription-only TV services without payment. Using a Kodi box in that manner is most definitely illegal.
