Hi!

I've had my Ford KA for a couple of months now (it's my first car, 04 reg) and the check engine light came on when I had only had it for a couple of weeks. We took it to the garage and they said there was a misfire on cylinder 2, which they fixed. One of the other issues was that the exhaust pops when the car is running, which we told the mechanic but he said this was a common issue with KAs and was not something to worry about. The light stayed off for a while, but recently it came back on again. This lasted a few days, then it went off for a few days, and now it is back again. When the light came back on I noticed that the car was spluttering slightly when in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear. Does anyone know if this may be due to the exhaust popping (even though this is a consistent problem while the spluttering is not) or had a similar thing with an intermittent check engine light?

Thank you!

If the car has only been in your possession for a couple of months and you bought it from a garage, there may be some warranty attached. If you take the car back to the garage, can they run a diagnostic check to see if a fault code is present which may indicate what the problem might be?

Oh yeah? Did the car come with this bumper sticker then?

The most common cause of a popping exhaust (by far) is a small hole in it. I'd put money on that being the cause of the problem with your car.
Maybe drop the words 'trading standards' into your next conversation with the alleged mechanic.

It needs to be fixed properly and the sooner the better.
