hi, i have an a class 10+ years old, done approx 90 k. Over a year ago the auto transmission went wrong and started going into safe mode at random times, stopping working entirley on 2 notorious ocasions. It became reliably unreliable, and is in safe mode all the time this means it cant go more than about 2000 revs, so im very limited speed wise, and pulling away and uphill. Also means a dramatic reduction in petrol consumption I didnt really have the money for a new car and it was going to cost circa 5k to fix.anyway, i thought id drive it till it actually died, spend as little as poss on it then get a new car. However, this conclusion is taking longer than anticipated as it's now crap but stable. It was due a B service a year ago but i didnt get it done because i didnt want to spend money on it. However, now the service is a year overdue, what shall i do? Shall i get a little service done?

I'd at least get an Oil and filter change done, bednobs.

thanks tony, can i get the garage to check the brakes and tyres etc without doing a full service?
Yes you can have brakes and tyres checked without it being part of a full service.
It sounds more like a software issue maybe with the ECU - a simple diagnostic shouldnt cost that much just to get a second opinion.
stick to plan A bednobs, get another car when it dies. If you are a bit short you can still get something pretty reliable for a couple of grand.

thanks for all your advice. It has had a second opinion unfortunately. The problem is that if they take it apart to see if it's mechanical or electrical and its mechanical, i'll then have to wait for a new gearbox to come from Germany, with no working car for weeks. If it's a sensor type thing, the thought is it's probably melted and somehow it's difficult to change the sensor without dropping out the engine; work that'll be expensive in itself. No guaruntee something else won't go wrong shortly after either i suppose.
if you are thinking of repairing it just buy a salvage GB from EBAY and get them to fit that, Much much much cheaper than a new one from germany. Is it auto or manual, if manual much cheaper.
