Is epsom salts the best for putting in the bath for aches and pains, or is there something else anyone can recommend please

It depends what's causing the aches and pains. I don't think it makes any difference what you put in the water. It's the heat of the water that soothes the muscles. You could try an infrared heat lamp
Joint pain or muscle pain?
NB Don't put the infra red heat lamp in the bath!
I always thought that Epsom Salts were for the relief of constipation. I must be wrong.
It doesn't matter what you add to the water.....it's the heat of the water itself that may help by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow. The hotter the better - within reason!
If it's joint pain though it's only going to be short relieved.

Essential oils like peppermint oil, lavender oil, and chamomile oil can help.
