I remember my mother giving Virol to me and my brother, lovely stuff. This was,I think just after the war. When our daughter was born in 1970 she was given it at the baby clinic. But within about two years it was no longer about,so is it still available if so where??

I remember Virol but there was an alternative also supplied by the health clinic. Roboleine (sp?) and we preferred this to Virol

I remember having some thick, orange stuff from a bottle. Was it liquid Haliborange? I used to love gripe water! We were given it when we had hiccups (don't know why?) but it was tasty and we used to wish to have hiccups just so that we could have a teaspoon of it!

Many thanks for all your interesting comments. But no one has answered my query. Is Virol still available or has it gone off the market?

I've found the missing name - Metatone liquid tonic. It's liquid christmas pud.
Well, wasn't Virol a malt extract preparation? You can still buy jars of malt-extract (with or without cod-liver oil) from health food shops eg Holland & Barrett.
...just found some in a cupboard- made by Martlet natural food and drink company.
Mike1111 - there is an old painted advert, still just visible, for Bile Beans, on the side of a house in York. I wondered what they were!
Metatone's lovely if you are feeling post-viral, I've always got a bottle in the medicine cupboard.
I loved Virol I remember being giving a spoonful before going off to school. I didn't join the queue for the Malt and Cod Liver Oil they dished out in school, same tablespoon for all of the kids no rinse in between doses. David Hargreaves with his candles running from his nose all the time, oh yuck.
I bought Virol in the early 1980s when my son was a baby and howled non-stop. Used to dip his dummy in it and it kept him quiet for quite a while. Doctor's advice was to put him in the pram at the bottom of the garden!

Couldn't find Virol by the time my daughter was born in 1985. Could do with some now for my new grandson, who isn't giving his parents much rest.
Did you ever get an answer keenonhist?
