I'm loath to allow access to my bank account by third parties, but I gather it is possible to have Netfix via a pre-paid card. Does anyone do this and how does it work please.

The cards are sold as gift cards but (obviously) you can simply use them yourself to pay for access to Netflix. Most large supermarkets sell them, as well as places like PC World, Argos and W H Smith.

Details on how to use them can be found here:

If you're still in Germany you might need to remember that Netflix services vary between countries. (e.g. Netflix subscribers in the UK can't necessarily access everything which is on the the US Netflix site). So you might need to check out what's available through Netflix in Germany.

I read: //Do I need to provide a credit card number to credit Netflix gift cards to my account?

No. Just go to netflix.com/redeem . Carefully scratch the PIN code on the back of the card with a coin and insert it. If you already have a Netflix account, follow the instructions above to redeem gift cards in your account. If you are not yet a Netflix customer, you can register easily. All you need is a gift card, an e-mail address, a password, and your zip code, and you can watch shows and movies.//

But if I give my email address how would this relate to my smart TV, does it mean I can only watch on my computer?
Once you've signed up to Netflix you can watch on any device you choose (as long as it's got the Netflix app installed):
