I want to cook OH a nice dinner tonight (something not remotely healthy).

I've got some pork belly slices and I want to cook them slowly in a homemade BBQ sauce, to be served with egg-fried rice and prawn crackers.

Any no-nonsense, tried and tested BBQ sauce recipes would be greatly appreciated.

This one is straight-forward and should do what you want:-

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
1 lemon
1/2 cup/100 g brown sugar
1/4 cup/60 ml vinegar
1/2 cup/125 ml tomato ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon chili powder, or to taste

Heat the oil in a frying pan and sauté the onion and garlic until soft and lightly browned, 4-5 minutes. Grate the zest from the lemon and squeeze the juice. Add the lemon zest, half the lemon juice, the sugar, vinegar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and chili powder to the onion and simmer gently, 5 minutes. Taste, adjust the seasoning and let cool.
Light the grill. Season the pork with salt and pepper and brush with the cooled barbecue sauce. Grill them, basting often, 5-7 minutes. Turn over and continue grilling and basting until the meat is done, (5-7 minutes longer).

Excellent, thanks, Flonska. Any special type of vinegar, or will malt do?
One addition to the above which is similar to mine. Smoked paprika a lot of it and if you have smoked garlic as well even better
My preference is to use Balsamic Vinegar - sorry forgot to say so originally - Malt will do, though, if you haven't got any.

I have some pimenton in the cupboard but I'm not a huge fan of it, if I'm honest. I don't bother putting it in my paella either, but might use it one of these days if I make a jumbalaya.

I might throw a whole star anise into the bbq sauce for good measure.

That's good, Flonska, as I have a whole bottle of Balsamic and it's not a patch on the previous thick, syrupy one I had from Aldi.
That aldi one is really good, i use it on strawberries
If you put all that lot in, the final part of the recipe will need an additional piece in the preparation instruction:-

"Light blue touchpaper and retire immediately!"
Better get in some extra air fresheners and buy the wee fellow a gas mask

It is good, Rowan, and I've used it in the same way. It's lovely for drizzling over salads too.
