Horrible, horrible story.
33 years in prison and then murdered on his release. But I won’t shed a tear.

> 'Intolerant' ellipsis

OK, far from being a "sweeping statement", my words were designed to define the people I was talking about, which was not everybody or every pensioner.

Intolerant: not an insult to those who are intolerant. Most are proud of it in a "I don't take [tolerate] any crap" kind of a way. Tolerant people do not demand the death penalty!
Motivated: even less of an insult, in fact a virtue. Can be bothered to get off their backsides and vote on an issue.
Pensioners: simply the audience I'm talking about (note: not all pensioners, but motivated intolerant pensioners). This is the audience who made a difference to the Brexit vote, and the audience who would make a difference to the death penalty vote.
45 yrs was the cut off age of those who voted more to leave than remain. Most of those are not pensioners.
I've no idea how a capital punishment referendum would go but I'd guess a large majority against.
The insult in your description to me is you think that anyone who would vote for the death penalty (or leave EU for that matter) is some doddery colonel blimp who can't think straight.
That's a million miles from what I said.

The other way around is a lot closer. "Some doddery colonel blimp who can't think straight" is very likely to vote for the death penalty.
Ellipsis - what a rude, ignorant person you are! Are pensioners not allowed a say in the running of the country then?? I'm a pensioner and it is my country too. What age do you reckon we should be cut off from society, and not allowed a say - 50, 60 or 70?? Yes, I voted out of Brexit because I do not like being told what to do by unelected bureucrats in another country, not because, like a lot of remoaners think, immigration. Sick to death of generalisation of pensioners on these type of threads.

Well said hereIam, agreed,
naomi, yes, I've always been intrigued that the Crippen DNA evidence is "disputed". After all, it's usually offered up as indisputable: where eyewitnesses lie or forget, DNA always tells the truth. But it seems there's wiggle-room after all.
Anybody else want to demonstrate they wouldn't know a generalisation if it slapped them in the face?
// More expense if they go to trial and more misery for their families. Never ending.//

well as even the Kray twins said: if you cant do the time - then dont do the crime.

none of these deaths were 'by mistake' - or oops I sudduv hit him and I didnt expect him to die

He said he hadnt done it by the way
I don't for a minute think his (Gaut's) death was by mistake, they must as you say be prepared for what punishment it brings.
// As for "Should we have the death penalty?", we know what the outcome would be if we had a referendum on it!//
I don't.

oh I do - about 80% favour return - some even favour capital punishment for non capital crimes ( where they dont kill someone)

much greater than the much vaunted brexit vote

[hooray! can I have a star please ? I have dragged a non-consenting Brexit into a thread where it done belong!]

Yeah -c ant find the post
there are questions about Crippen
The body in the cellar - small patch of skin which just happened to be neck AND where the ligature was tied
oh pleez - come on!
and MIGHT have been a body of woman whose abortion went wrong (or not as Mystic Meg might say)

Mr Crippen was a dentist by the way ..... his headed note paper came up for auction a few years ago (few hundred)
Ellipsis, I think if you look at the members of far right groups who want the death penalty reinstated and to kick out all foreigners you will see a large majority are well under pension age!
I'm glad to see there are still some people who are against vigilantism.
That is true, AuntLydia (not that I've previously said or implied that it wasn't).
Thank you Baldric x
