My dad is a mechanic and I think what he's said before is that you can have it done 1 month less 1 day before it's due to run out! So if its due to run out on the 1st June, you can have it done from the 2nd May onwards next year.
But i may not be 100% correct in this so don't take my word for it! Call up your local MOT garage or google it!!
You can have one done whenever you like. You can't leave it longer than 3 years after manufacturer, but there's nothing to stop you doing it earlier if you wish.
my car is only 9 months old,but because its used for private hire,it has a mot every six months,it dosent matter when its done,as hammer has said as long as its done before its due.
if you are concerened then ask the vendor to mot it again the day before you pick it up and get the test report so that you can see if anything was flagged up as needing addressing soon, ie tyres almost down to legal limit etc.
you can do it whenever you like, the one month less 1 day bit refers to how far forward they can date an MOT. So if your mot is due on 1 june you can have it done on 2 may but provided you supply the old mot they can date the new one from 2nd june not 3rd May. If that is not an issue then you can have it done whenever you like. It's common practise to do an early mot on cars that are comming up to 3 years old for selling purposes.
Surely the only issue here is `was the car given an MOT five weeks ago`. If it was then you can see for yourself by looking at the document. Hammer is the only person talking sense!. You should have no interest in the other "replies" as they just DO NOT apply. Until 1st. August, the car does not need an MOT so why confuse the issue in typlical loosehead fashion.

Whos's confusing the issue? I was giveing the accurate answer and at the same time explaining some of the others. What's your problem cliffspratty? and why did you have to say it twice. Try reading what I wrote instead of jumping in without digesting it.

Does not my first sentence agree with Hammer? All I've done is offer further info, if that is "typical loosehead fashion then I can think of worse things.

What a pratt you are, cliffsarse, read all my 3k + posts have we? Go on an then come back and tell me what is "typical Loosehead fashion"

Nowt wrong with your answer Loosehead.
Keep the heid though......mind the blood pressure!
Cliffs, where do you consider my answer not to apply.
Had the mot done 5 weeks ago said that tyres or brakes are worn to point of needing replacing soon and that vehicle has been used since then the tyres or brakes may not be safe but now.
I suggested the request of an mot when the date of purchase comes around for peace of mind.
LH, don't listen to him. Your answer was spot on as usual. Nothing wrong with elaborating a bit and giving info that's not specifically asked for, but relevant to the thread, which was what you did.

Replies on here are useful to loads of people, not just those asking the question.
Thanks Hammer + Ianess, now lets play spot the T055er shall we!
you are allowed to test a vehicle for mot as long as the previous mot expires no more than 30 days from the test date.
