...free to a good home?

As some may know I had major problems with my little laptop at the weekend. I decided that I would cut my losses and invest in an updated model. It arrived today. I was going to leave it for someone else to set up but at teatime I thought I would give it a go myself.

My bad, as they say in the States. I spent 30 minutes trying to get it out of the Amazon packaging wit very sharp instrument at my disposal. In the meantime I was covered in blood from where the blades slipped. When I finally got it out it was only to find that it was sealed in another hard box which took another 30 minutes to crack.

I maanged to put it together; it came without a power cable but the one from my old laptop fitted into the transformer. I started up, had to listen to some witless American broad talking down to me as though I were simple. Great, I thought, after two hours of torment we're all set.
Not so. It stubbornly refused to recognise my wireless mouse and my internet mobile dongle. I feel I've wasted £330 on a pile of tish. This is going in the bin unless a worthy cause wishes to take it off my hands.

Check out your local charities - I think The British Heart Foundation shops take electrical goods.

Me, I'd find your nearest women's refuge and drop it off there, they always need anything they are given.
This witless American broad, was she able to operate hand tools without injury do you think?
Does your wireless mouse use a dongle ? Might need specific drivers.
Ditto the internet thingy.
I'd leave it overnight then try again tomorrow.
Nice one Douglas.

I really am annoyed, and it's not just the money. In the past five years I have had three laptops and all have accepted the wireless mouse and internet dongle no problem. I kept powering down and up again but no joy from this machine. I will take your advice and try again tomorrow, if I still have the patience
that's why I loathe buying anything new as in computers etc. You can never get it the same or something.
Try again once you have had good sleep.
Why not try your local Computer Repair shop? They'll come out and help set it up for you - for a price obviously but better than writng off £300+ after one day.
yes please, mine has just expired

I might have to do that. The thing is, the computer is set up and works but will not respond to the mouse or internet dongle.
Even if you can't get your existing mouse and dongle to work I'm sure you could go back to the supplier and order a compatible mouse and dongle for much less than the £330 you have spent. Or you could return the whole thing and try to get your money back
My sympathies, Jackdaw.
Perhaps a friend can help. I'm on the other side of the pond.
Windows 10 should recognize your dongles or at least use generic ones until you update.
In the meantime try a wired mouse & plug into the modem directly with an Ethernet cable.
Win 10 should then update itself.

I'm surprised about the lack of power adapter. Was this a direct Amazon purchase or from one of their re-sellers?
DO NOT buy flash-drives or SD cards from them. Many have faked capacities
* generic drivers *
Don't you have the option to send it back to the sellers? It's not 'fit for purpose' I think the phrase is.
You certainly have a right to send it back for a refund without giving any reason. It is the case that it doesn't even have to be damaged or faulty, but you have 14 days after delivery to cancel the order and then a further 14 days in which to return the goods.

Scroll down on the Government Link to..'Online, mail and phone order sales'.
