What sort of size - as big as a banana ?

I was around in the 50s but can't immediately recollect anything like that I'm afraid. But I'm curious now to know what it was, so I hope you get a definitive answer.
You've beaten both me and my wife. Varieties of fruit were thin on the ground in the 50s and I can't think of any that were available then that aren't available now.

Can't really say what size, I would only be about 10rs but I could fit in the palm of my hand and I can only remember the one occasion. Some years ago whist in Malta I mentioned this to a Maltes friend, he showed me a bush and said that this were it came from. I never had it confirmed.
Yes, I can vaguely remember banana figs.

Could be the banana fig! This had a smooth surface but that could be due to the packaging.
I don't remember these from the 50s but they seem to be a miraculous food and I don't know why there isn't more known about these banana figs.
