Hoping to go to New England in the future. Would like to do our own itinerary. Perhaps hire a car. Did initially want to go in the fall. Have been doing some research and find it quite confusing. And also wouldn’t want to go when it was really busy! If that’s possible?! As anyone done self-catering? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

fall is when it's busiest, which is no surprise as it's beautiful. But it's not as though you have permanent traffic jams: driving is fairly easy int eh USA, lots of good roads. Food and accommodation are generally cheaper than in Britain but not as much cheaper as they used to be. We've just eaten at diners when we've done trips like this. You sometimes get discounts for staying at the same motel chains, eg Comfort Inns.

Watch out for "leaf peeping" websites that tell you where the best colour is to be seen at any given time: it comes down from Canada and peters out somewhere down Virginia way.

Thanks for that.
Hi Alfie
My wife and I have done the "leaf peeping" trip a couple of times and have loved it both times. First time we did motels/hotels etc,, second time we rented a home for a week in Maine and then a week in New Hampshire, both self catering. We enjoyed the self catering bit the best - not having to live out of suitcases for two weeks was a dream ! I would suggest New Hampshire in the White Mountains for the best colours of fall, especially the Kancamagus Highway - in full colour it is stunning. I could go on forever - if you want any more info let me know. Enjoy !
