Vague about what to expect next. My sister has only 15% of her liver function left. She has Cirrhosis and is quite yellow. She is 54 and in hospital.
Am hopeful she might pull through, any opinions?

is she on transplant list David ?
Her prognosis is poor unless she has a liver transplant.
That's it david, in a nutshell.
Question Author
Not yet on transplant list. But the chance of getting a transplant highly unlikely.
Thank you Sqad, I thought as much. Though hope springs eternal.
oh dear..lets pray..and hope...xx

Thank you Minty, you are so lovely.
//Her prognosis is poor //
But not inevitable though Sqad??
A friend of mine ended up spending 3 months on a liver ward after haemorrhaging and bloating etc. She was an alcoholic. She recovered and hasn't drank in the 4 years since. She was told that she is lucky to be alive and still has some problems associated with liver failure/problems but is still here and doing the best she can.
I wish your sister all the best David...

Thanks nailit. I shall tell her what you wrote.
David, tell me to do one if you want, I wont take offence, but is your sisters cirrhosis due to alcohol?
Question Author
You needn’t do one nailit. Alcohol predominantly, but also other complications.
All the best to your Sister David. Xx
Thank you David. The reason I asked is that my sons maternal grandmother died from cirrhosis and had never drank in her life (she was deeply religious and despised what alcohol and drugs do). When she was admitted to hospital she was constantly asked how much she drank until she was crying with frustration that she DIDNT drink. It was just assumed by the medics that she must have been a drinker because she had been admitted...and diagnosed... with cirrhosis of the liver.
I hope that ur sister gets the same chance that my good friend did and pulls through. Ive read many judgmental posts on AB over the years RE: the likes of Gazza and George Best etc.
Hope she recovers David, all the best m8...

Kind of you Arkside.
Nailit, your grandmother probably had primary biliary cirrhosis a different type.
Someone presenting with hemorrhage and bloating is a different thing, it is possible to extend the life of someone by performing a procedure called a TIPPs that reduces the pressure in the distended veins and reduces the risk of further bleeds.

David, is your sister at a specialist centre for liver conditions, or in a local general hospital?
