It does happen in other places...when I was last in California, there was a heatwave and trains didn't run...
Then there's "leaves on track" and "ice".

Summer, Winter and Fall taken care of then.

What's the excuse for Spring? I've forgotten.

In the old days shorter rails were used ( remember the diddly dum diddly dee ) when you passed over a join, which allowed expansion in the heat. Now long welded rails are used and in the heat this can cause the rails to buckle.
^^^ that's no way to describe rail staff...!

In the photo above, taken on July 24, 1978, extremely warped rail tracks near Asbury Park, New Jersey led to the derailment of a passenger car, which can be seen in the background.

Happens on occasions in many places.
the rails today are supposed not to buckle as the rails are pre -stretched
Dave and I are sitting at opposite ends of a huge balcony.....I read this and told him that trains in the UK can't run...the conversation went....

SD: Why?
G: They've got buckled lines.
SD: Gness! That's not like you!
G: What???
SD: Swearing like that.
G: I didn't swear?
SD: You did! You said.....They've got F*** All lines.

I suppose they've tried unbuckling them, or fitting buttons instead.
in the UK, rails are stressed to a median temperature to take account of most conditions. the sort of heat being experienced now is outside of that envelope; to take account of them would require the rails to be restressed every year to take account of cold weather in the winter. it's an economic balancing act - and while extreme heat remains the exception, it's cheaper to live with a few disruptive days than spending thousands on adjusting the rails. as global warming gets going, that policy can be expected to change.
Couldn't they go back to the short rails ?
