A neighbour didn't spoonerise but often used the wrong words. He was telling me about a mutual friend and said you'd think a man of his calipers (calibre) would know better.

The correct term for that is 'malapropism'. Puts me in mind of Hilda Ogden and her 'muriel' (mural).
