After returning to the UK from abroad after 10 years the doctors receptionist gave her forms to fill in. She said she had driving liscence, passport and birth certificate but w as told that was no good. She needed to have a bank account, utility bill or a rent card. She has none of these as she will be living with me for the time being and does not have a job yet. There is room in the surgery and she is English. We were surprised that she could not join. Anyone else come across this ?

Well it should be quite easy to open a bank account. Don't you have social security numbers / fiscal numbers ?
here is a useful document

https://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/doctors/Documents/how-to-register-with-a-gp-homeless.pdf

I would print it out and take it along ....
and if there is funny stuff ask to see the practice manager

basically it is list A - proof of identity
the document specifically says you dont need proof of address
which is what they were asking for

// quite easy to open a bank account//

No it is not easy to open a bank account.
that's right it's not easy to open a bank account at all.

The only thing you can do Tamaris go to your own bank that you have an account with and and tell daughter to bring regular ID and they should allow her to have a bank account. You need to go with her.
Simples! Buy a rent card for your local stationer, charge her 50p per week and bingo, she's got the ID.

Last time that I opened a bank account (a few years ago) I had to have an interview that took over an hour. Like been interrogated by the Gestapo. All I wanted to do was open an account to be able to pay some bills by DD.
^^'from', not 'for'.
It can be a nightmare. My teenagers didn't have bills in their names and they didn't all have passports and driving licenses. Birth certificates don't count as no photo. They ended up getting Citizen cards to use as ID.

Jenny Joan will that work for sure ?
Just reading an article about scams, and how money was taken from bank accounts, and how much easier it was for crooks to open accounts online.
Perhaps this is the answer, rather than opening one in person?
Have a look at moneysupermarket.com and moneysavingexpert.com first. They will give you an idea which banks to approach.
why don't you give it a go - my nephew couldn't get a bank account - mind you - some years ago - the grilling he and I went through was unbelievable but he got in. At that time I never knew it was that bad but as I say - give it a go. x
Not long back I wanted a new current account. I already had two current accounts with the same bank (it's a long story), but it took well over an hour of questions, answers, and formfilling before they got it sorted out.
It is a long time since I opened my one and only account (1970). It was then the Midland Bank, now HSBC. I filled in a simple form and all I had to provide was a letter from my commanding officer to say that I was a fit and proper person to operate a bank account. It turned out that I wasn't, but that's another story and I still have the account.

I had - I have lived here for 30y
Clerk - I dont know about that at all
Me I have seen you regularly in this bank during this time ( she had Crouzon's disease sort of adult funny face symdrome -but I deliberately didnt wish to embarass )
and she said - that is what you say !
the sniping went on ....
