As the Moogster said, we live in a country that is, for the most part, tolerant and non-sectarian. There's no bar whatsoever on a Catholic becoming PM.

This is a slightly facetious thing to say, as the PM obviously does have significant power in the UK political system and JRM well knows it. UK prime ministers are not unrestrained dictators, obviously, but they're usually the single most powerful person in our system - and have significantly more power than heads of the executive tend to in other countries.

And obviously he would say that his religion is a private matter. It's in his interests to do so. He does not, however, believe that gay people - his fellow citizens, its worth saying - should have the right to marry for explicitly religious reasons.
He's about as much in touch with the ordinary people as Alec Douglas-Home was.
As long as the pope didn't bend his ear.
