1. He was not charged with assault on the officer, he was charged resisting arrest.
2. It was dealt with in a magistrates court and therefore was not a serious offence and they dish out lesser punishments.
3. The fracture was not deliberate.
4. Sentences are not designed by liberals. The Government and Judicery make the law.
5. If the police cannot charge him with assault then he is not going to be punished for that.

If you read the link the man was only charged with resisting arrest and he pleaded guilty (meaning an automatic 33% off the sentence) In the circumstances a small fine was the only possible sentence. The police know this ,so they are just making a point about how they are always facing the possibility of injury while doing their job. Remember this story is in the Daily Wail so it has been worded to invoke the maximum possible outrage. Daily Wail readers need their daily helping of outrage! or they get withdrawal symptoms.

I disagree. Firstly a load of liberals (including Tories) have infiltrated Government and the Home Office, secondly why is it so often that the lowest sentence is dished out?
But then I would expect no different from you two, I'm sure you would like all prisons closed and criminals to be given free houses and cash for life for the poor souls.

^ the 33% off applies to fines and community service sentences as well as jail terms. A lot of people think it only applies to prison sentences. Plus 'band' fines (Band A B C )are based on the offenders income,so if the person is on benefits a 'band' fine is never going to very much. So again it looks like the fine was the maximum sentence possible .
We are way too soft on criminals imo.
I sometimes watch the reality police programmes on TV and the number of times that people are arrested and charged with terrible crimes, then given a suspended sentence, warning or small custodial term, is amazing!
Most ordinary folk would agree that the courts need to be tougher, if the prisons get clogged up then so be it, the name of the game is punishment, not a soft option!!

TTT the 'punishment' in prison is the removal from your environment, friends, family, job. As I have said on her many times 75% of those sent to prison for even a very short sentence NEVER get paid work again. This is due to the prejudice against employing an 'ex con'.
The actual conditions in a prison do not make a difference ,it is the actual fact fact that a person has been 'inside' that does the damage to their future. Harsh prison conditions just make life even harder for prison officers. They have a terrible job as it is ,with a far higher risk of attack and injury than police officers . Prison officers want all prisoners to have TV sets for example. A prisoner sitting watching TV is far less likely to be plotting to attack a prison officer,than one sitting alone in a cell with nothing to do all day. I have experience of being inside a prison and talking to prisoners (including murderers serving life) it gives me more insight into prison conditions than most AB members

The police only send charges for what they think will get a conviction for so at the time they obviously didn’t think anything else would get a conviction.
I also think the judiciary system needs an overhaul. For quite a few years I have watched, often with dismay, at the sentencing that has been going on. Even in lower courts people with multiple previous convictions getting let off or with a simple slap on the wrist. At what point does someone say enough is enough and previous convictions get taken into consideration. One theft is bad enough but two? Ten? Fifty or a hundred? There are people with many convictions for the same or similar offences but each time they are let off. That has to stop.
Otherwise it sends out the wrong signals to people.
