Eva Cassidy.
By way of additional info, she became famous, at least in the UK, largely as a result of a) being promoted by Terry Wogan and b) a posthumous appearance on Top of the Pops 2, singing Over the Rainbow. Also, I believe she is actually Canadian, not American, though I'm not 100% sure of this.

Sounds like Eva Cassidy to me
Canadian??? Stick to being pedantic over other people's answers Spelly.

She was born on 2 February 1963, in, (a couple of days after my sister!) and grew up in, Washington, D.C. and was greatly encouraged in her early career by her family and Chuck Brown (a well known blues man in the area).....She died after being diagnosed with advanced melanoma a few months before, which, it is thought, was a legacy of working outdoors in a plant nursery years before.....She was only 33 and was one of the greatest losses to music in recent history.....her beautiful voice will be sorely missed by all other musicians around the world.

If you need any other info then you might find this website handy - http://evacassidy.org/eva/

I see no need for your hostility, sft. I tried to give further information, and made it PERFECTLY CLEAR that I was "not 100% sure" she was Canadian. Sorry not to be perfect, it must be wonderful being you. And incidentally, why is that when you correct someone's mistake that's fine, but when I do it it's pedantic? Hypocrite.
Now, now ...
Who cares - shes dead - im sure shes not bothered
