Why do American cities have fire hydrants and we do not?

Americans supply urinals for their dogs.
We do have fire hydrants .The signs to show them are painted yellow and marked 'H'

Ours do, but they are hidden.

Have you noticed little yellow covers in pavements? To help locate them there is a small yellow post nearby with a black H on it.

Eddies. Just wondered why theirs are permanent fixtures rather than our access points.
How on earth does a pooch find a hidden hydrant to pee on.

Most unfair I think.
Theirs are more impressive when they are accidentally crashed into, giving a spectacular fountain.
so the kids can break them open and dance in their flow when it gets schorchio !
Of course we have fire hydrants. We simply put them under a cover in the ground. We then place yellow 'H' signs nearby, showing the pipe diameter in mm and the distance to the hydrant in metres:

The other reason for different hydrants could be the American drunks need something to trip over or lean against whereas the English drunks can trip over themselves or lean against a friend, until the friend moves.
good point oz !
American buildings are often multi-storey, meaning that high-pressure hydrants (fed by a very large water pipes) are needed in order to ensure that hose jets can reach the tops of the buildings. So they need a dedicated network of high-pressure pipes, leading to some very big valves (which are needed to withstand the pressure and aren't easily positioned below the ground). Our buildings aren't usually as high, so hydrants can simply be an add-on to normal domestic water supplies.
That sounds too sensible Chris.

I'm sticking with dogs, drunks and, I'll toss in Ghetto kids keeping cool when it's scorching.
